What's New?

I recently read It's Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy by Capt. D. Michael Abrashoff (Warner Books, 2002).  This book is a wealth of solid ideas about how to have a great influence on others.  It's highly entertaining and a quick read.  What I like best is that Abrashoff comes across as a leader with real humanity as well as sharp business acumen.  And the techniques he used to achieve excellence aren't costly or complex. Valuable for anyone, this book is a "must read" for you if you have direct reports.   --   Joyce

I choose the longer view of wisdom over the more short-lived satisfaction of being “right.”   - Julia Cameron

Tips for Leaders:

If you want to influence someone, focus on what they want rather than on what you want.

Great leaders need time alone to think.  Give yourself an hour a day, if you can, or at least an hour a week to just be alone without your email or cell phone or other distractions.  If you develop this habit, you will find that you gain greater clarity on the situations you face.

Leading is about making sure that others have what they need to get the job done and then letting them do it without interference.  Do this often enough, and your stature will grow.

Strategic leadership requires a big picture perspective that can only come from getting out of your own comfort zone.  Read across many disciplines and interests so that you become attuned to global events and cutting edge technologies and ideas.
